Here is some information about harakeke. Harakeke is also known as flax. Flax is often found in a garden. Before you cut the flax say a karakia. You have to say a karakia because I think your telling the grandparents that you are about to cut them. Don't cut the harakeke in the rain. You must cut the harakeke when it’s not in flower. When you are finished cutting the flax, the left overs must be cut up small and put under the plant to help it grow. You can`t be messy, keep the space you are working in tidy.
The storiy about the harakeke is that the rito (baby) is in the middle and then the awhi rito (parents) are on the outside of the baby to keep the baby safe. Also the tupuna (grandparents) are on the outside of the mum and dad.
